It started with a question that wouldn't let go.
In 2019, our founder Lars traveled to Hangzhou for a technology conference. A local colleague invited him to a traditional tea ceremony. What was supposed to be a quick cultural experience turned into a four-hour conversation about oxidation levels, terroir, and harvest timing.
Lars had been drinking tea his entire life. He thought he understood it. That evening showed him he'd been drinking packaging and marketing, not actual tea.
He spent the next eighteen months visiting tea estates across China, India, and Japan. Not as a tourist. As someone trying to understand why commercial tea tasted nothing like what he'd experienced in that ceremony.
The answer wasn't complicated. It was logistics.
Most tea sits in warehouses for months before packaging. Then more months in distribution. By the time it reaches consumers, the volatile compounds that create complexity have evaporated or oxidized.
Fjord Tehus was built around one principle: minimize time between harvest and consumption.
We established direct relationships with twelve family-owned tea gardens. Orders trigger harvest cycles. Leaves are processed, sealed, and shipped within 72 hours.
This isn't scalable. It's intentionally small-batch. It's the only way to preserve what makes exceptional tea exceptional.
We could package in bags. We could warehouse inventory. We choose methods that preserve quality, even when they complicate operations.
Every collection includes the garden name, harvest date, and processing method. You should know exactly what you're drinking.
Tea culture can feel intimidating. We share knowledge without gatekeeping. There's no wrong way to enjoy tea.
We're three people in Bergen who care deeply about tea quality. No investors. No growth targets. Just a commitment to doing one thing exceptionally well.
